Hurricane Sandy alert

With Hurricane Sandy likely to produce strong winds and power outages across our region, SUNYIT's emergency management team is closely monitoring the situation. We are asking all members of the SUNYIT community to be prepared and to remain alert as the situation could change in the aftermath of the storm.

Classes for today—Monday, October 29—will be held as scheduled. Any change in the status of classes will be announced via the home page of our website, sunyit.edu, Facebook, community mailer, and area radio and TV stations. You can always check to see if individual classes have been cancelled by clicking on the red-and-white "C" at the bottom of the home page. In the event of a power outage, notices will be posted at the main entrances to academic buildings and residence halls.

Tonight’s performance by comedian Jimmy Failla has been canceled. The Student Center will close Monday at 10 p.m.

If there is a prolonged power outage, the campus has back-up generators that will provide power to residence halls. Sodexo food service is prepared to provide meals for students with meal plans, in the Student Center if necessary. Life-safety and building access services have battery backup and will not be affected. Residential students should make sure their cell phones are fully charged and get a flashlight and batteries and/or a flashlight app. DO NOT use candles—they are a fire hazard.

NY-Alert subscribers will receive emergency alerts and other information, but NY-Alert has advised it will not add new subscribers to its system for the duration of the storm and its aftermath. However, its website, nyalert.gov, is a good resource for emergency announcements and information available to non-subscribers. For up-to-date forecast information, consult weather.gov, weather.com, accuweather.com, etc.

Human resources is communicating to employees whose personal and family considerations may affect their ability to report to work. All members of the SUNYIT community are asked to be aware of the changing weather situation and take appropriate precautions.
