Ernest Shand '04, Sociology

(Phoenix, AZ, 11/03/08) Ernest Shand, a former member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors who was part of the Wildcat Men's Basketball coaching staff, announced the establishment of a non-profit organization formed to give student-athletes without athletic scholarships an equal opportunity to attain a college education.

According to Shand, student-athletes of all genders, ethnicities, and skill levels now have a place to fulfill their athletic dreams while becoming better prepared to adhere to the responsibilities of a successful college student. Student-Athlete Total Success (STATS) offers a core of services within the realms of athletic skill development, service learning, and higher education advisement to non-scholarship student-athletes.

"With the majority of student-athletes not going to college on athletic scholarships, there's a disassociation that makes kids feel like a college education is no longer within their reach" said Shand, who is the founder of STATS.

On the contrary, STATS provides the formula to negate this distorted ideology. "We not only empower student-athletes, but our services and mentorship help them set the foundation to build their own success," Shand said.

According to Shand, through the efforts of STATS, an athletic scholarship no longer has to define whether or not pursuing higher education is feasible; STATS is attempting to make it an expectation. Detailed information on the provided services, participation, and how to donate to the cause can be found on the company's website at www.checkmystats.org. The site also provides information on fundraising events, future service additions, and sustainability.

From 2002 to 2004 Shand was a Student Assistant Coach with SUNYIT's Men's Basketball team and, after graduating he was promoted to an Assistant Coach and held that position from 2004 to 2006. In 2004 he was also the Student Representative on the IAC - Intercollegiate Athletics Committee within SUNYIT's Athletics Department.
