Note: The bachelor of science in network and computer security, replaced the bachelor of
science program in telecommunications starting in the fall 2010 semester.
Adding
to its offerings in technology and professional studies, SUNYIT will launch a
bachelor of science degree program in Network and Computer Security (NCS)
starting in the fall 2010 semester.
Officials
say the NCS program will address an increasing need in society. It will build
on two academic strengths at SUNYIT: popular bachelor's and master's degree
programs in telecommunications and computer science offered for decades.
"Perhaps the most important emerging issue in networking and computing today is
the issue of information security. The federal government has identified a
critical national need for workers in this field," said Esther Bankert, SUNYIT
provost. "The Utica-Rome area has a special need for network and computer
security professionals due to the presence of Rome's Air Force Research
Laboratory-Information Directorate headquarters, and this program will help
address the increasing demand for cyber security professionals in both
government and private industry."
"We sought input from a professional advisory board whose members include
leading cyber security researchers associated AFRL and information technology
executives with regional businesses," said John Marsh, associate professor. "While
our computer science programs focus on educating programmers, and
telecommunications programs focus on educating network engineers and IT
professionals, the ever-larger focus on information security demands a more
specialized curriculum - widely known as cyber security."
Marsh said cyber security professionals are in high demand throughout industry
and government sectors. Public awareness of the potential for devastating "cyber
attacks" on the nation's critical information infrastructure is high, and terms
such as "hacker", "identity theft," and "botnets" are commonplace.
Increasingly, legislative efforts have mandated high levels of information
accountability for both government and private institutions.
