Sociology
Degree Requirements
SUNYIT offers a curriculum in sociology and anthropology which leads to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in sociology. The curriculum also helps provide for the general education needs of other students and the social science background important to the preparation and training in other majors.
Courses explore the general social forces and cultural forms which shape human events as well as the application of social and cultural perspectives in two specialization areas: criminology and social services. Course offerings reflect these emphases.
After introductory work, survey courses in various areas lead to more advanced courses. In addition to work in one or more specialization areas, students can usually supplement their work with courses in areas where we do not have a concentration, or with courses in other arts and sciences or professional disciplines. Primary candidates for the major are:
- Students holding Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in a field like human services, industrial relations or criminal justice, who wish to broaden their theoretical perspective and increase career mobility
- Students holding Associate of Arts (A.A.) degrees who wish to have a background in applied sociology or anthropology before entering graduate school or seeking employment, especially in the criminal justice or social service area
- Students currently working who desire a broader-based education than that available in a professional program
- Students seeking dual majors combining professional study with a degree in social science.
