HSM Concentration

The healthcare field is a dynamic and exciting field with significant potential opportunities for you. Find detailed information about what a career in health administration affords you at: Reasons to Pursue a Career in Healthcare Management from the Association in University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA.org).

Certification
The Health Services Management Program, in the pursuit of excellence, has been certified by the most prestigious certifying body for undergraduate programs in Health Services Administration, the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. The following has been extracted from the AUPHA website:

The Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) is a not-for-profit association of university-based educational programs, faculty, practitioners, and provider organizations. Its members are dedicated to continuously improving the field of health management and practice. It is the only non-profit entity of its kind that works to improve the delivery of health services throughout the world - and thus the health of citizens - by educating professional managers.

The full spectrum of students from those first choosing health administration as a career to seasoned managers and clinicians maintaining or upgrading skills and competencies across their career spectrum, must have the confidence and assurance that the academic programs they choose are of the highest quality and relevant. Employers must have confidence in the quality and competence of program graduates. AUPHA fosters and/or conducts tested quality assurance mechanisms for both graduate and undergraduate health administration education programs. Full member AUPHA programs, both graduate and undergraduate, are recognized for having withstood the rigors of peer review where curricula, faculty, educational outcomes and student and employer satisfaction are critically examined by external review teams.

The Curriculum
The Health Services Management (HSM) area combines management studies in two major areas: business and health services. The HSM courses expose students to the many aspects of health care and its delivery. Topics covered in the HSM concentration include: the health care system, health policy, health economics, health financial management, epidemiology, health law, and management practices specific to the health professions; giving students the background they’ll need to enter the health care field.

For those planning on pursuing the concentration, one HSM elective and an internship will round out their preparation. A minor is also available and that is described below.

All HSM coursework can be completed online.

Table 1 describes the coursework required for the HSM concentration and Table 2 describes the requirements for the HSM minor.
