Security and Fire Safety

Security

SUNYIT has provided a residence hall incorporating various security systems which are designed to enhance the safety of the residents. However, security and safety is a shared responsibility between SUNYIT and students residing in the residence halls. Therefore, residents are required to comply with policies in order to maintain the security of the buildings.

Residents are encouraged to keep their room/apartment locked at all times. Residents are strongly advised to insure all of their personal property against loss, damage, and/or theft by appropriate individual or family insurance carrier.

SUNYIT does not accept liability for residents' personal property. Students are advised to seek insurance for personal belongings.

Fire Safety

Residents are required to abide by all fire regulations, and the evacuation of the residence halls during fire alarm is mandatory. Tampering with fire equipment and/or non-compliance with fire regulations may result in disciplinary and/or civil action. The use of candles, potpourri burners, and incense is prohibited. Microwave ovens are provided for snack preparation only. Gas or propane grills, internal combustion engines, or tires may not be operated or stored in the residence halls or apartments. Residential life or college staff may enter resident student apartments and rooms to verify compliance at any time.

When the fire alarm goes off, follow these steps:

  1. Remain calm
  2. Assume that every fire alarm is for real.
  3. Get properly attired, depending upon the time of day. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
  4. Evacuate the building IMMEDIATELY and calmly. USE YOUR COMMON SENSE! Your safety is of utmost importance.
  5. Report to the central commons and await instructions from, the Residence Hall Director, University Police, or Fire Department.

Campus Emergency Phones

Throughout the complex, you will find campus emergency call boxes. They are orange and usually attached to lighted poles spotted by a blue light. Should you require the assistance of University Police, press the button on the boxes and follow the directions. You can also reach University Police at ext. 7106 for non-emergencies and ext. 7105 or ext. 111 for emergency situations. Note: Do not be afraid to use the call boxes.

Keys/ID Cards

Keys/ID Cards (proximity cards used to access residence halls) are provided for residents as a matter of convenience and security. The unauthorized use or reproduction of a Key/ID Cards for any college room or facility is prohibited. Lost Keys/ID Cards must be reported to the Residential Life Staff immediately. The loss of a room key may result in the re-keying of your room and all other rooms in the suite and all affected mailboxes. The resident is responsible for associated charges.
