Common area damage is considered damage that occurs in areas that more than one student has access to (i.e. bathroom, living room, hallway, lounges, laundry rooms). Common area damage can include the vestibule and stairway of each townhouse. Common area damage will be assessed to all students who have access to the damaged area only after efforts are made to determine the responsible party (students are responsible for themselves and their guests.) If the responsible party does not come forward, common area damage assessments will be considered final and are not subject to appeal. Access is defined as having keys to, or card access to, a specific area of the residence halls.
The furnishings and equipment are provided for the enjoyment, convenience, and safety of all residents residing in the residence halls. Residents are responsible for the care and cleanliness of their apartment or room and in abiding by college policies in maintaining these facilities. Residents may use tacks to display posters or banners on their room/apartment wall(s), with respect to fire and safety policies. (See also Decorations). Personal furniture is not permitted. Residents are responsible for their guests or visitors and may be held responsible for their actions. Theft or vandalism is prohibited. Students are prohibited from doing self repairs in college owned housing.
The removal, loss, or damage of a window or screen from student rooms or apartments is prohibited and may result in installation/replacement charges and disciplinary action. The throwing of objects from windows and the placing of any objects outside the window, including aerials, banners, flyers, and other equipment, is prohibited.
In addition, alcoholic beverage containers, alcohol promotional signs, and items which may affront or alarm other members of the college community may not be displayed to the outside of a student apartment. (See also Student Code of Conduct (pdf) for additional information).
Students are encouraged to decorate their rooms and apartments but cautioned that any nail holes, stripped paint, etc., may be assessed.
