Sociology

SUNYIT's B.A. degree emphasizes the application of sociological and anthropological knowledge in the search for innovative solutions to pressing individual and community problems. Effective consideration of these issues requires a thorough grounding in social theory, literacy in the appropriate research, and training in quantitative and qualitative research methods.

SUNYIT offers two specializations in applied sociology: criminology and social services. Minors include: sociology, anthropology and science, and technology and society.

Criminology specialization explores a range of sociological theory and research about law making, law breaking, law enforcement and the consequences of law enforcement. This knowledge base prepares students to confront the social policy issues associated with crime control and furnishes the background for productive careers in criminal justice occupations.

Social service specialization fosters an appreciation of the social sources of personal and social problems and the dynamics associated with policies and programs set up to deal with them. We aim to help students become effective consumers of knowledge created by applying sociological and anthropological perspectives to the study of social services, a focus which provides a theoretical and practical understanding of the realities of work in the social service professions.
