Portfolio Evaluation

Portfolios are required for those students enrolling in the Professional and Technical Communication program who have less than a 2.5 GPA.

The Portfolio Evaluation form is used to record feedback regarding the portfolio and to provide a vehicle by which to score the portfolio.

Portfolio Evaluation Schedule

Portfolio evaluation takes place throughout the school semester during campus visits, at Spring and Fall Open House and orientation, and/or by appointment.

Please call 315-792-7334 to schedule an appointment for a portfolio evaluation

Scoring the Portfolio

The Portfolio Evaluation form contains two sections that are scored independently: the Skills Area and the Portfolio Quality.

Students must present material that represents proficiency in at least four of the seven Skills Areas. Each Skills Area is rated on a scale of 1 - 15, 15 being the highest. Students can earn up to 60 points in the Skills Area section.

In addition, the portfolio itself must meet the Portfolio Quality requirements. Each portfolio requirement is rated on a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being the highest. Students can earn up to 40 points in the Portfolio Quality section.

Students may earn up to 100 points between the two Portfolio Evaluation sections (the "Total Portfolio Score"), but must earn at least 70 points to qualify for admission into SUNYIT's Professional and Technical Communication Program.

What if I don't earn 70 Points?

Students may earn less than 70 points as a Total Portfolio Score simply because they do not have a wide enough variety of work to present. Students may resubmit their portfolios for evaluation at the end of their first semester of study, including samples of work they created throughout the semester. Students are strongly encouraged to incorporate any comments provided on the original Portfolio Evaluation form in order to improve the quality of their portfolios prior to resubmitting them.
