The Projectile Device Competition has two divisions: Middle School (through 8th grade) and High School (9th -12th grade).
Objectives
- To create a device that will launch a ping-pong ball accurately within a given range.
- We will provide ping-pong balls but each team is encouraged to bring their own UNALTERED ping-pong ball to assure consistency.
Range
Middle School Participants – targets will be placed at a distance of 10 feet and 20 feet.
High School Participants – target distance will be anywhere between 5 feet and 30 feet.
Note: Distances will be measured from the front edge of the device to the center of the target
Target
There will be three different diameter targets concentric to each other (bullseye style), each worth varying credit toward accuracy. The diameter of each ring is as follows: 6", 16", 24". The three rings will lie flat on the ground.
Constraints
Any projectile that hits the ceiling will be disqualified. The ceiling height will be at least 15'.
Footprint of the device must be less than 144 in2 (in collapsed form). Any parts of the device that do not touch the ground can exceed 144 in2.
The device must not use pneumatics or combustion.
Must be reset and/adjusted within two minutes.
High School Teams-
Must be able to launch a standard ping-pong ball anywhere within the 5 - 30 foot operatiang range - design adjustability into your device.
You will know the exact target launch distance on March 11, 2010, prior to the start of the competition.
Competition
Must be able to land on the target at the location specified by the judges on the day of the competition, and within the operating range.
Each team will have three opportunities to hit each target.
The inner 6" ring will be worth three points, the 16" ring worth two points, and the outer 24" ring one point.
High School Teams-
Each team will fire at three different targets, and have three opportunities to hit each target.
Tie Breaker
High School Teams-
In the event of a tie, judges will choose a random alternate distance that each team will fire at three times. Each team will be allowed five minutes practice time at the new distance prior to the start of the tie breaker round.
