ILL FAQ

Important notice for all students, staff and faculty who use Interlibrary Loan:

Starting September 17, 2007, the Cayan Library at SUNYIT will charge $.25 per day for each overdue Interlibrary Loan book.

It is imperative to return ILL items on time so that the lending library will continue to lend to SUNYIT. One renewal may be possible before the due date, but this is at the discretion of the lender. A lending library also has the right to recall their item at any time.

Thank you for helping us maintain a good relationship with our lenders, so that they will continue to share their resources.

Who can request interlibrary loans?
SUNYIT students, faculty, staff, and Empire State College students are eligible to request ILL’s. ESC students must be identified as such on the request form. Community borrowers should request items through their public library.

How do I make requests?
Go to http://www.sunyit.edu/library.
Click on Interlibrary Loan.
Click on Online Interlibrary Loan Request.
Enter your SUNYIT username/password.
Click on "Logon to Illiad".
Register as an Illiad user. You will be asked for the U number on your SUNY card. This is a required field. You need to register for Illiad only once.
Enter your ILL request and you will be notified about the status of your request by email.

How long does it take?
Many items arrive in less than a week, sometimes overnight. The average time for receipt of your request is 6 days, sometimes slightly longer for a book.

How do the items arrive?
Books arrive via a courier service, UPS, or mail. Articles may be delivered to the library by mail, electronically, or by fax. Electronic delivery is dependent on the capabilities of the lending library.

Where do I pick up my items?
Items may be picked up at the library’s Circulation Desk.

How do I find out the status of my requests?
You can check the status of your requests by logging on to Illiad and looking at your account.

Is there a charge?
Interlibrary Loan Service is offered free of charge at this time, although there is a cost to the library for each item.

Is there a limit to the number of requests I can make?
There is a limit of 15 requests a person may submit per day.

How long may I keep items?
Journal articles do not need to be returned.
All other items must be returned by the date chosen by the lending library. It is imperative to return ILL items on time so that the lending library will continue to lend to SUNYIT.
One renewal may be possible but this is at the discretion of the lender.
A lending library has the right to recall their item at any time.
If you get a recall notice, you must return the book immediately.

How do I renew items?
You may request one renewal from your Illiad account page before the current due date. Not all libraries honor renewal requests.

What happens if my items are overdue?
SUNYIT charges a fine of $.25 per day per item. Overdue fines may also be charged by the lending library and are not negotiable.

Copyright Restrictions
Libraries are able to provide journal articles to their users because the copyright law makes provision for "fair use" of published materials. There are restrictions, however. Libraries are not permitted to request more than 5 articles in a calendar year from a single journal title for its last five years of publication unless we have purchased a subscription to that title. (See Title 17, United States Code)

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a request for a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

For items that cannot be ordered due to copyright restrictions, see a librarian for the nearest location of the item or for help in locating alternative resources.

Why was my request unfilled?
1. You are not a student, faculty, or staff member of SUNYIT or an Empire State College student.
2. Our library owns the item. We do not request it even if it is checked out. A hold may be placed on the item at the Circulation Desk.
3. It is a required textbook. We do not request textbooks.
4. Your library privileges have been blocked because of unpaid bills.
5. You submitted incomplete or inaccurate information in your request.
6. The lender will not lend certain items.
7. The item exceeds the library's copyright limits.
