Creating Your Web Directory
The first step is to create the web directory. This involves logging in to the college server (ftp.sunyit.edu) and issuing the command to create the web directory that has the appropriate rights for other to access the files in it. It is recommended that a secure shell (i.e. SSH or putty) program is used to log in to the college server.
The instructions below show steps to create the web directory with SSH
- On PCs running Windows,
- Start up ssh and log in to shell.sunyit.edu
- The login prompt looks similar to the one below.
- On this line, type the command setup4html in all lowercase letters and press <Enter>.
- Logout by typing lo and pressing <Enter>.
This completes the creation of your web directory, which is named public_html. You can now copy files into it.
