If you are an International Student holding F-1 Status, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will only issue a social security card to you for purpose of employment.

The SSA will not issue Social Security Card in order to open a bank account, rent a apartment, apply for driver's license or sign up a cell phone service.

You can apply for Social Security Card if you have permission to work On-Campus.

• You must first find On-Campus employment. For information on available jobs visit Human Resource (A011)
• Once you find a job that would like to hire you, you must get a letter from that on-campus employer offering you employment
• Once you obtain a letter from On-Campus employer, you must submit a copy of it to the ISS. The ISS will then issue you a letter authorizing you for On-Campus employment.

• Download the application for Social Security Card at http://ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf. The application will include instructions on how to complete the application and identifies the document necessary to receive a Social Security Card.

2. Letter from the on-campus employer offering you employment
3. Letter from ISS authorizing you for on campus employment
4. Your valid passport
5. Your I-94
6. Your I-20 or DS-2019 form
7. SUNY Card
8. Other forms of ID might helpful (driver's license, health insurance card)
