Making Overhead Transparencies
Each classroom and most conference rooms and laboratories at the Institute of technology contain an overhead projector capable of displaying clear transparencies. This paper provides you with information on how to successfully create the transparencies needed for your presentation.
Black & White Transparencies
Material may be made into a clear transparency with black and white information as follows:
A. Infrared (Thermal) Type
You need a Laser Print or Photocopy of the material you wish to be placed on the transparency. Handwriting, Typewritten text, Ink Jet printer or ribbon printing will not work.
You need to obtain the blank "Infrared (Thermal)" transparencies (these can easily be identified as they have a notch in one corner). They can be purchased at the bookstore or at the Instructional Resources Office.
Instructional Resources has the thermal machine that will create the overhead. There is no cost to use this machine, if you supply the overhead transparency stock.
B. Photocopier Type
You can purchase transparency stock that can be used in "Plain Paper Copiers" or PPC type as it is called. They can be purchased at the bookstore or an office supply store such as Hummel's Office Supply. Note that this is a different type of transparency than the thermal type described in "A" above. The two types are not interchangeable.
You place the PPC transparency stock in the paper tray of a photocopier and then place the material you wish to make an overhead of, onto the copier glass. This way you can make a transparency direct from a book or other material without cutting it out.
Color Transparencies
Material may be made onto a clear color transparency (original information must be in color to start with) with the information as follows:
A. Color Photocopying
Instructional Resources has a color photocopying machine.
Material (must be 8 ½ X 11") such as a book, photo, or sheet of paper may be placed on the photocopier glass and Instructional Resources will supply the special transparency material.
There is a $ 1.00 per transparency copy charge. This cost covers the transparency stock and color ink which we (Instructional Resources) supply.
No appointment is needed to make color photocopies
B. Color Printing onto a Transparency
Material from computer generated word processing and graphics programs can be printed onto a color transparency.
The Graphics Station is capable of printing from the following suites:
- Microsoft office XP Suite (Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Publisher)
- Corel Suite 9 (Word Perfect, Quattro Pro, Presentations)
- Lotus Suite (Wordpro, Freelance and 123)
- Harvard Graphics
- Pagemaker
There is a $ 1.00 per transparency copy charge. This cost covers the transparency stock and color ink which we (Instructional Resources) supply.
Note: The graphics station is not to be used to create material to be placed onto transparencies. Material must be created in the computer labs, at home, etc... and brought to Instructional Resources on a 3 ½" floppy disk to be printed out only.
Instructional Resources schedules appointments for use of the graphics station to produce transparencies, scan material, etc... The station may not always be available on walk-in notice due to other students reserving time, faculty/staff reservations and other commitments. Students are urged to call 792-7180 to schedule an appointment.
