Getting Started for Faculty
Elluminate's website provides excellent training materials. If you plan to use Elluminate, you will need to attend two live, online training sessions via Elluminate Live!
The live training is ongoing and free, just visit this website for the schedule and signup for the two classes listed below.
- Getting Started With Elluminate Live! For Moderators
- Next Steps With Elluminate Live! For Moderators
The training is free, but the sessions fill up quickly. You will be asked for an email address and to create a password, which you will use when joining in the live session on the scheduled date/time. (Note: this password is ONLY for your Elluminate training and is unrelated to using Elluminate at SUNYIT.) Each training session is about 1.5 hours. You will need a noise canceling headset w/ microphone for best quality (the computer speakers and microphone will cause echo problems). You do not need a webcam, but you do get some brief practice with it if you have one.
Required equipment/software:
- Computer
- Internet connection (broadband)
- Noise canceling headset with microphone - can be ordered through the bookstore if you wish. (the internal computer mic and speakers will cause excessive noise and echo problems)
- Current version of Java
Make sure your computer is ready by visiting the First Time Users Elluminate page: http://www.elluminate.com/Support/?id=62/.
You should also visit the Moderator Training page for versions 9.5 and up. This is filled with both recorded Elluminate training clips as well as PDF downloads.
To request an Elluminate course or meeting, please contact the Reena Lederman Gerard or call x.7427.
Getting Started for Students
Elluminate's website provides excellent training materials. If your instructor is using Elluminate, you will should review the following materials to prepare your computer and learn how to interact in the live, online Elluminate classroom.
Required equipment/software:
- Computer
- Internet connection (broadband is far better than dial-up connection)
- Noise canceling headset with microphone - can be ordered through the bookstore if you wish. (the internal computer mic and speakers will cause excessive noise and echo problems)
- Current version of Java
To prepare your computer you must plan time in advance of the class session to go to the First Time Users Elluminate page: http://www.elluminate.com/Support/?id=62/. Be sure to follow all the steps AND use the Online Orientation link in Step 3 as shown in the image below.

Connecting: Your instructor should send a link to you. You will access the Elluminate session via a student/participant link. It is NOT part of ANGEL. It is a web-based virtual classroom. Once you are online and have opened your browser (ex. Firefox), use the link sent by the instructor to begin the Java program and open the virtual classroom window.
In the Elluminate classroom: The Orientation shows you how to use the tools. Be sure to run the Audio Wizard from the tools menu to ensure the sound is good.
