The Master of Science in Information Design and Technology [IDT] offers an interdisciplinary examination of the role of new and emerging media within contemporary culture and communication while allowing students to develop a specific area of research to suit their unique academic and professional goals. Through theory, practice, and individual research students will examine the complex relationship of between diverse types of information and the technologies that are used to work with and communicate that information. Offering historical perspective alongside technical instruction the IDT program places particular emphasis on the social impact and potential of new communication technologies.
There are 33 credits in the degree program, consisting of 11 classes, including the thesis/project, and 27 of the credits must be taken at SUNYIT. Two of those classes are unrestricted electives and your adviser can help you determine what fits there. You can choose an adviser from the program faculty.
While all graduates will be expected to develop a sophisticated understanding of the vital issues surrounding information design and its technologies, individual students will choose to focus of one or more of the following areas:![]()
The program encourages current professionals seeking educational advancement to come together, work collaboratively, and participate in the continuing growth of new information and communication practices.
Students will be prepared for advancement in professional careers that include secondary school and community college teaching, technical communication, public relations, marketing, instructional design and technology, government service, publications, corporate communication, and training for profit and non-profit organizations, healthcare management and other industries.
The aim of the program is to engage students in critical assessments of various media and their applicability for a given purpose. Students will study how to select an appropriate medium for a particular message to a specific audience. They will create original materials using a variety of tools for various media, including web pages, multimedia, newsletters, and other desktop publishing documents, scripts, articles and storyboards.
The joint BS/MS program is a well-integrated program that permits students to complete both a bachelor's degree in Communication and Information Design, and a master's degree in Information Design and Technology in a reduced timeframe with a reduced total number of total credits.
