Our students on their Interdisciplinary Studies experience

 Heather Moksness

"The Interdisciplinary Studies Program at SUNYIT has been the perfect program to suit my needs as a hopeful entrepreneur. I feel that I need to have a degree that is just as flexible as the ever changing world we live in. I designed my own area of concentration to be History, Technology, and Globalization. We live in an international society and in order to conduct business in the most efficient ways possible, I feel it is necessary to understand our historical relationships, maintain sustainable growth, and identify how we can mutually benefit in this integrating and forever developing world. With the flexibility in this program I have been able to personally customize my studies in some very non-traditional ways. For my internship, I traveled into the Amazon region of Brazil and worked as a translator with a medical group doing humanitarian work. This helped me practice my second language skills as well as explore my interest in sustainable technology. I also was able to do an independent study about the history of the political relationship between the United States and Brazil. With the current success of Brazil's economy I plan to use this degree and all the unique learning opportunities it allowed me to experience and apply them to working in business between the two countries."

Crystal McLean

"When I first enrolled at SUNYIT, I wasn’t sure what major would truly fit my long term goals. My intention was to complete an ESL (English as a Second Language) certificate when I was finished with my Bachelor’s program. I learned of a new program at SUNYIT called Interdisciplinary Studies which would allow me to customize my concentration. This sounded like an excellent alternative to the major I had originally enrolled in. I created an individualized concentration that I called “English & Cultural Literacy” which would be valuable in working with minority populations not fluent in the English language.

This is truly one of the best programs I have ever been a part of. The professors have not just taught material; they have taught me to think critically and rationally, to explore ideas rather than memorize facts, and how to apply those ideas to the world around me in a practical and functional way. The professors took a personal interest in my goals and helped me to reach them, but challenged me at every step of the way. This is truly a one-of-a-kind program. It has helped me grow intellectually, and individually."
