Open Letter from President Bjong Wolf Yeigh
I wish to reaffirm the college’s philosophy and policy concerning affirmative action and equal employment opportunity.
Since its beginning, SUNY Institute of Technology has been committed to policies of non-discrimination, affirmative action, and equal employment opportunity. SUNYIT’s initial Affirmative Action Plan was published in 1974. At that time, appropriate guidelines and procedures were established and followed accordingly, before any practices contrary to the basic tenets of equal employment opportunity could surface.
SUNYIT is committed to selecting the best qualified staff without discrimination against individuals on the basis of a disability, unrelated to job requirements, race, religion, creed, national origin, age, color, veteran status, marital status, or sexual orientation.
As a primary tenet, SUNYIT embraces diversity of thought, culture, gender, age and ethnicity. SUNYIT’s policy on Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity complies with the letter as well as the spirit of law, thus supporting the values of this educational community.
Therefore, every member of SUNYIT’s community is being asked to work together to guarantee a completely nondiscriminatory process in the recruitment, hiring and promoting of qualified women; minority group members; persons with disabilities; and special disabled, Vietnam-Era and other eligible veterans at all levels of employment throughout SUNYIT. Outside agencies with which SUNYIT contracts will also be expected to comply with applicable anti-discrimination laws.
Finally, this Affirmative Action Compliance Program demonstrates continued support for an increasingly diverse work force. Increased diversity throughout the SUNYIT community nurtures both social growth and learning excellence, which are enthusiastically encouraged. For these reasons, I urge all those employed at SUNYIT to be familiar with the institution’s Affirmative Action & Equal Opportunity Policy and Discrimination Complaint Procedure so that our policies and procedures can be implemented efficiently and effectively. The policy and procedure can be found at www.sunyit.edu/human_resources/policies.inc.
