Health Insurance & Waiver

Health Insurance coverage is mandatory at SUNYIT for full-time students. However, if the student has other health insurance (e.g., under a parent, employer, etc.) the student may waive SUNYIT's designated health insurance. The on-line waiver MUST be submitted BEFORE classes begin EACH SEMESTER.

Please DO NOT confuse the health fee with the health insurance fee. These are two totally different fees that provide different services.

Health Fee: ALL students, (full-time, part-time, and international) pay the health fee for on-campus health services at the Health and Wellness Center.

Services provided at the Health and Wellness Center (Campus Center, Room 217)

  • Sick and injury care
  • Womens' and Mens' Health (STD testing*, GYN Exams*, etc.)
  • Medications (prescription and over the counter)
  • Vaccinations (MMR, Hepatitis A & B, flu, etc.)
  • Blood & Laboratory Work (throat cultures, HIV, etc.)
  • Referrals (to specialists, to community agencies, etc.)
  • Health Education & Literature
  • Substance Abuse Education & Counseling
  • Smoking Cessation Assistance
  • Medical Equipment/Supplies, etc. (band-aids, cough drops, crutches, etc.)

    * - nominal fee

Health Insurance Fee: This fee provides a limited health insurance plan for SUNYIT students who do not have any insurance and allows the student to access healthcare in the community. It helps defray the high cost of healthcare.

Full-time Students

All students (12 credits or more) are mandated to pay the health insurance fee IF they do not have their own private health insurance. The on-line waiver MUST be submitted EACH SEMESTER BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN (directions below), otherwise the student will be automatically enrolled AND billed for the SUNYIT designated health insurance. Your username and PIN number are required to access the on-line waiver. All new enrollees receive their username and PIN number at their initial registration.

Part-Time Students

Part-time students (less than 12 credits) who do not have health insurance can purchase the SUNYIT designated health insurance plan by requesting it through the Bursar's office.

International Students

All International students (usually on F-1 or J-1 visas) who attend any SUNY institution are mandated to purchase the International Student health insurance provided by the SUNY system.
