Health Insurance & Waiver
Please be aware of important changes regarding medical insurance taking effect in the 2012-13 academic year as a result of the federal Health Care Reform Act. These changes have a direct impact on coverage, including costs (premium and deductibles), benefits, exclusions, limitations and terms which the coverage remains effective.
Medical Insurance coverage is mandatory at SUNYIT for full-time students and Department of Nursing students, regardless of credit hours. If the student has other insurance (e.g., under a parent, employer, etc.) the student may waive SUNYIT's designated insurance. The on-line waiver --- see instructions below---MUST be submitted BEFORE classes begin EACH SEMESTER. Fall 2012 deadline is August 27, 2012.
Because of the federal Health Care Reform Act, the cost of medical insurance per student is $665. If you choose to waive this coverage, you must do so before the August 27th deadline. Failure to submit the waiver each semester will result in your being enrolled in and billed for the SUNYIT designated medical insurance plan. The $665. per semester premium is non refundable. For more information about coverage provided under this plan, see the Medical Insurance Policy Summary 2012-2013 (pdf) below. A comprehensive brochure will soon be available. You can also call the Health and Wellness Center, 3115.792.7172.
Please DO NOT confuse the medical insurance fee with the health fee. These are two totally different fees that provide different services.
Medical Insurance Fee: This fee provides a comprehensive medical insurance plan for SUNYIT students who do not have any insurance and allows the student access to health care in the community.
Health Fee: ALL students, (full-time, part-time, and international) pay the health fee for health related and counseling services at the Health and Wellness Center and Counseling Center. For full list of services provided by the Health and Wellness Center/Counseling Center (Oriskany Hall, Suite B) see Health and Wellness Services.

Full-time Students
All students (12 credits or more) and nursing students, regardless of credit hours, are mandated to pay the insurance fee IF they do not have their own private insurance. The on-line waiver MUST be submitted EACH SEMESTER BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN (directions below), otherwise the student will be automatically enrolled AND billed for the SUNYIT designated medical insurance. Your username and PIN number are required to access the on-line waiver. All new registered students receive their username and PIN number through the mail prior to the first semester taking classes.
Part-Time Students
Part-time students (less than 12 credits) who do not have medical insurance can purchase the SUNYIT designated medical insurance plan by requesting it through the Bursar's office.
International Students: All International students (usually on F-1 or J-1 visas) who attend any SUNY institution are mandated to purchase the International Student health insurance provided by the SUNY system.
