Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Health and Wellness Center hours?
The Health and Wellness Center is open during the academic year from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. During the summer and all other breaks, the Wellness Center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with limited clinical services (with the exception of Friday hours 8-12 during the summer break).

Do I need an appointment?
Appointments are especially helpful (but not required) for RN, Nurse-Practitioner and Health Educator visits - they help us to better plan our day and reduce waiting time. Appointments are required for the physician, mental health counselors and the consulting dietitian.

Is there a doctor available or on call?
The Health and Wellness Center physician specializes in family practice medicine. He is available by appointment once each week, either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons, during the academic year. 

Are my records kept confidential, and who sees them?
All health records are confidential. They are only viewed by the Health and Wellness Center staff. Information regarding your condition cannot be released to anyone without your written permission.

What health services are offered at the Health and Wellness Center?
The Health and Wellness Center provides physician's visits, nurse-practitioner visits, first aid, emergency care, lab work, medications, well women care, crutches, MMR, tetanus, and influenza vaccines on a regular basis. We have a Registered Dietitian, Steven Mariani, who is available by appointment Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. during the academic year.

I am a part-time student. Can I still use the Health and Wellness Center services?
All students can utilize the Health and Wellness Center. Students must provide a Health History & Physical examination (completed within the last 2 years) to be eligible for routine care.

Why do I need a physical examination completed in the last two years?
We use the physical to plan your care when you come in for services.  Current medical information is essential in receiving the best medical care.

Where can I obtain my old physical exam?
You can obtain a physical exam from your place of employment, your previous college, your physician, or a hospital (if you were in-patient).

Why do I need vaccinations?
Vaccines are a New York State Law. Since the early 1980's there have been many outbreaks of measles and some outbreaks of mumps and rubella (MMR). These diseases can kill or disable people. Meningitis vaccinations, especially for college freshmen is a recommendation, although not required.

Where can I get my MMR information?
Contact the college you attended, your local high school, your health care provider, or bring in your baby records.

Where can I get an MMR shot?
The Health and Wellness Center can provide you with free MMR vaccine if you qualify for it.

Do I have to pay for my medications?
All medications that we stock are free.  Any medication that we do not carry in stock, a prescription can be given if appropriate.

What do I do if I get sick or hurt and the Health and Wellness Center is not open?

  • Emergency: On a campus phone dial 7111, Off campus dial 911 or 792-7111

    The University Police will call the EMT's and the ambulance.

  • Less Serious Condition:

    Visit a local Urgent Care: Slocum Dickson Urgent Care, Independent Physicians Urgent Care or Faxton-St. Lukes Urgent Care

Does the Health and Wellness Center cover dental problems?
The Health and Wellness Center staff will assist you with making appointments with a local dentist of your choice. Fees for dental services are not covered by the health fee or student health insurance plan.

Free Dental Services are available for students who qualify through the SUNY Canton/MVCC Dental Hygiene Clinic Program in Rome, NY.  Contact Stacey Genther, MS, Health Educator at 315-792-7808 for more information or to request an appointment.

Does the Health and Wellness Center provide "women's health services"?
Yes! The Health Services Nurse-Practitioner does GYN exams for a nominal fee. Birth Control is discussed.

Can I get an HIV test done?
You can get a confidential HIV test done at the Health and Wellness Center free of charge.

Do you test for STD's?
We provide tests for sexually transmitted diseases for a nominal fee (HIV testing is free). 

Does the Health and Wellness Center offer emergency contraception (EC)?
The Health and Wellness Center can provide you with emergency contraception through a prescription or you can purchase it over the counter at a local Pharmacy.

What is available for "special" dietary needs?
The Health and Wellness Center provides a consulting dietitian. Call or stop by to make an appointment.

I'm diabetic... what is the availability of needle and syringe disposal?
The Health and Wellness Center will take/dispose of needles/syringes.

Can I get vision testing and eye glasses?
The Health and Wellness Center staff will assist you with information and directions for local optometrists.

 

Insurance Questions

How do I fill out the insurance waiver?
You must enter your ID and PIN # on the web and enter your insurance information. If you are uncertain about the procedure come to the Health & Wellness Center. A staff member will assist you with entering your data on the Health and Wellness Center computer.

How often do I have to submit an insurance waiver?
Insurance waivers must be completed every semester.

What does my insurance/health fee cover?
The health insurance will help defray some expenses if you have to use the Emergency Room, Urgent Care or go to a hospital during the hours that the Health and Wellness Center is closed. The health fee covers the services provided to you at the Health & Wellness Center.

I have my own insurance...can I still use the Health and Wellness Center?
Definitely. All students pay a mandatory health fee.

I am a part-time student and I don't have insurance. Can I buy the college insurance?
Yes. Part-time students can purchase the insurance at the Bursars Office, 315-792-7412.

How long will I be covered by the college insurance?
The college insurance covers you on or off campus. It runs August 15- January 14 (Fall Semester)and January 15- August 14 (Spring Semester).

When can I purchase the Health Insurance?
You can purchase the health insurance in August and January.

What is the deadline for submitting the insurance waiver?
The first day of class each semester.

What's the difference between the Health Services fee and the insurance fee?
The Health Services fee covers health care at the Health and Wellness Center. The insurance fee provides some coverage for you when the Health and Wellness Center is closed or if you are away from campus.

Can I purchase insurance for my spouse?
Yes. You can purchase the college insurance plan for your spouse. Contact the Health and Wellness Center for details.

Can I purchase insurance for my children?
Yes. The Health and Wellness Center has information regarding Child Health plus. Contact the Health & Wellness Center for details.

Can I continue my health insurance coverage after I graduate?
Yes. Alumni can purchase a postgraduate insurance policy. Contact the Health and Wellness Center for details.
