Mission and Goals


A student’s ability to achieve optimal health includes recognizing the importance of a particular health outcome and understanding the factors that contributed to this.Optimal health includes choosing to change or modify risk behaviors and develop new and improved behaviors.

Health is not merely the absence of a disease or illness. Health is realizing right from wrong in your everyday decisions. Health is individual attempts to achieve wellness through effort. Health is the motivation to improve the quality of your life and the lives of those around you.

The mission of Health Education Services is to provide the students with the most valuable, current information that will prepare them to lead healthy lives long after leaving the learning environment.

Peer Health Education

HLT 200

(A 2-credit course listed under Health Education)

What are Peer Health Educators?

A group of students who are trained and committed to providing information and assistance to students and the community regarding health and wellness related issues.

What is the purpose of a Peer Health Educator?

To educate their peers and assist them in making healthy lifestyle choices through programs, presentations, skits, group discussions, outreach and campus awareness events.

To serve as individual sources of information, provide appropriate referrals and serve as student health center advocates.

To advocate for a healthier campus and to serve as a role model.

Why should you become a peer health educator? What are the benefits?

  • To build up your resume for a future career or continuing education
  • To gain communication and interpersonal skills
  • To help enhance emotional, physical, and spiritual well being among SUNY IT students
  • To increase student awareness and responsible decision making

Peer educators must have healthy and responsible behaviors regarding alcohol and other drug use!

SUNYIT students can play a highly effective role in encouraging and influencing their peers to talk honestly about and develop responsible habits and attitudes towards the use or non-use of alcohol and drugs, along with the issues of safe sex, abstinence, healthy eating, etc.

SUNYIT students can provide their peers with contact names and phone numbers for help with many health related issues and encourage them to seek professional help if necessary.

HLT 200 Course Description

An introduction to the field of peer health education with an emphasis on the development of a wellness lifestyle and self-responsibility. Communication and interpersonal skills needed to peer counsel will be introduced. Additional topics include drug, tobacco and alcohol use and abuse as well as sexually transmitted diseases. Students will be involved in campus outreach activities such as informational displays and social norming data collection.

HIV Testing with Pre-test and Post-test Counseling

SUNY Institute of Technology offers free and confidential HIV Testing. Testing using a 20 minute test called Oraguick Rapid Testing. The Fluid tested would contain antibodies to HIV if a person is infected with the Human Immunedeficiency Virus.

SUNYIT only offers Confidential HIV testing. Anonymous testing can only be done in a facility specifically authorized for that purpose.

Clients are identified by name
Test results are entered into the medical record and become part of the permanent medical history
HIV antibody positive test results are reported to the State Health Department

No information that can be traced to individual is recorded or reported
All clients have the option to convert a positive test result to confidential

All students pay a health fee that entitles them to the full complement of Health Education services offered by the Health and Wellness Center.
