Assistantships and Fellowships

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships are awarded each academic year to select full-time graduate students who have been formally admitted to a master's program at SUNYIT. Students will be assigned to work in an academic department or campus office and will have a weekly work obligation. The number of work hours required per week will depend on the category of funding that they receive (see below). The assistantship awards come in the form of a New York State tuition waiver or a cash stipend that pays out on a bi-weekly basis. Domestic students awarded a graduate assistantship must enroll for a minimum of nine credit hours of graduate coursework per semester; International students must enroll for a minimum of twelve credit hours per semester.

Project Based Awards

Project based awards are made each semester to select graduate students (both full-time and part-time) who have been formally admitted to a master's program at SUNYIT.  Faculty put in a request for a graduate student to work on a designated project for them (ie., designing a website, devleoping a business plan, writing a literature review for a research project, etc.). Students do not have a weekly work obligation, but instead will be assigned a total number of hours required to complete the project during a designated timeframe. A deliverable will be identified at the start of the project that will be due upon completion. The project based award comes in the form of a cash stipend that will pay out once the project has been completed.  Please note that 2-4 weeks processing time will be required for the payment of this award once the project is complete.

Graduate applicants that are interested in being considered for a Project Based Award should complete the Graduate Assistantship Application. The completed application should be returned to the Graduate Center by June 1 for fall consideration and December 1 for spring consideration. The number of awards each semester is subject to the availability of funds.

SUNY Graduate Diversity Fellowships

A limited number of SUNY Graduate Diversity Fellowships are awarded each academic year to full-time graduate students who qualify for admission with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better. The award may include a full-tuition waiver and a cash stipend of up to $3,000 for the academic year.

To be eligible, applicants must be US citizens or have permanent resident status, and must demonstrate in writing how they will contribute to the diversity of the student body in the program for which they are applying, including by having overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education.

Graduate applicants that are interested in being considered for a fellowship should complete the SUNY Graduate Diversity Fellowship Application.  The completed form must be returned to the Graduate Center by June 1 for fall consideration and December 1 for spring consideration.  The number of awards each semester is subject to the availability of funds from the state.
