Financial Aid / Scholarships

Applying for financial aid at SUNYIT is as simple as completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Verification Worksheet (pdf). Visit Financial Aid or contact the Admissions Office for a financial aid application packet.

Merit Scholarships/Non-need based
SUNYIT awards academic merit scholarships typically to the top 20% of the admitted class. All students are reviewed upon acceptance. Criteria includes high school academic achievement; strength of coursework (AP, IB, College-level, Honors, etc.); SAT or ACT scores; letters of recommendation; personal statements; extra-curricular activities. Review will begin in January.

Those seeking merit scholarships should submit a supplemental application and complete the admission application by February 1. Available scholarship funds are limited and distributed among a competitive applicant pool based on acceptance date. Scholarship opportunities may not be available for students applying after February 1.

The following freshman academic merit scholarship amounts were awarded to students last fall:

  • $4,500
  • $3,000
  • $2,000
  • $1,000

These scholarships are renewable annually provided recipients meet renewal requirements and full-time status at SUNYIT. Currently the top 20-25% of our entering freshman students receive an academic merit award.

Need-based
SUNYIT awards need based scholarships and grants to incoming freshmen who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, have financial need and meet all federal and institution requirements.  Students are automatically considered upon acceptance and must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with SUNYIT. Review will begin in January.

Application-based
Each year, various scholarships are made available to students through outside agencies, or internally through our Development Office and College Foundation. Applications will be posted to the SUNYIT Accepted Student webpage after the 1st of the year.

Scholarship Renewal Requirements

  • Freshmen entering SUNYIT on a merit scholarship are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and be enrolled full-time through their first two years of study (first four semesters).
  • Renewal review for students who entered as freshmen will occur after the first year is completed and subsequently will occur on a semester basis. Students will be notified of their scholarship standing after their first semester as a reminder of renewal requirements.
  • Starting the junior year (completion of the fifth semester), students are required to achieve either a 3.25 cumulative GPA or 3.25 semester GPA as a minimum and be enrolled full-time.
  • Transfers entering SUNYIT on a merit scholarship are required to achieve either a 3.25 cumulative GPA or 3.25 semester GPA as a minimum and be enrolled full-time each consecutive semester of the award. Note: Does not apply to two-year Residential Scholarships.
  • Students who do not achieve the minimum GPA requirements for merit scholarships stated above will have the opportunity to appeal their loss of scholarship to the Scholarship Appeals Committee through the Financial Aid Office.
  • New freshmen and new transfers receiving need based awards must meet the financial aid rules for satisfactory academic progress, remain enrolled full-time each semester, and be in good standing. A FAFSA is required each year to renew need based awards.
  • Application based awards may have individual renewal requirements which students are required to review and accept prior to the awards being posted to their accounts.

All scholarships and grants are renewable based on the renewal requirements of each award offered; renewal requirements are mailed with scholarship and grant offers. Residential scholarships and grants are renewable only if the student resides on campus all four years, and cannot be substituted.
