Freshman

Admissions Requirements

Generally, freshman applicants should carry at least a B/B+ average in a college-preparatory program and have achieved an SAT score in the 1000-1100 range (or approximately a 22-24 composite ACT score). Admission is based on high school average, SAT or ACT scores, strength of coursework and other relevant supplemental information. All applicants are reviewed on an individual basis.

Regular/Traditional
We encourage you to apply for fall semester admissions by February 1. The recommended application deadline is February 1. However, applications received after that date will be considered on a rolling basis or until the class is full. Notification of admissions decisions begin after January 15.

All applicants should submit a supplemental application and complete the admission application by February 1. Scholarship consideration is based on academic achievement as well as the required supplemental information including the applicant's essay, letters of reference and extracurricular activities. Available scholarship funds are limited and distributed among a competitive applicant pool based on acceptance date. Scholarship opportunities may not be available for students applying after February 1.

Note for homeschooled students: There is specific documentation required for admissions and financial aid. Please contact the Admissions Office for a list of required items.

Early Action
To apply early action, an online application must be submitted on or before November 1. A paper application must be postmarked by November 1. Applications must be complete by November 15. If your application is complete by November 15, we will notify you of our decision by December 15.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)
(Available for New York residents only) This program is designed for students who need special academic assistance as well as financial aid. SUNYIT’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) provides academic support and financial aid to students who show promise for mastering college-level work, but who may otherwise not be admitted. Offered only to full-time students who are New York State residents, EOP accepts students who qualify, academically and financially, for the program. NOTE: You cannot apply for both EOP and Early Decision.

Eligibility
To be eligible for admission to EOP you must be:

  • A New York State resident for 12 months prior to enrollment
  • Ineligible for admission under traditional standards, but demonstrate potential for completing a college program
  • In need of financial assistance within established income guidelines see http://www.suny.edu/Student/academic_eop.cfm

In selecting students for the program, priority is given to applicants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. If in the year prior to enrollment your family income falls below EOP guidelines due to unemployment, separation, divorce or death of a parent, etc., you may still not qualify for EOP if you are not from an historically disadvantaged background.

Special Talent Admissions
SUNYIT will also consider applicants who possess or have exhibited considerable talent in areas of academic, the arts, leadership, technology, or varsity athletics, but who do not otherwise meet the general admission criteria. You must request, in writing, to have your special talent reviewed. A committee composed of admissions staff, faculty, athletics, student affairs, and other appropriate individuals will determine your admissibility. Contact the Admissions Office for more information.
