Financial Aid Eligibility
In order to be eligible for financial aid (grants, work-study and/or loans), students must be matriculated into a degree program, be enrolled for at least six credit hours each semester for federal aid programs, and be meeting satisfactory academic progress. Undergraduate students must be enrolled for 12 credit hours each semester for the state aid programs (courses you have previously passed and are now repeating cannot be counted toward the required 12 hours). Only courses required for your degree program are considered in determining your enrollment status as it relates to financial aid eligibility. Students cannot be awarded for classes that do not count toward their degree. Step 1
Apply for a Federal Student Aid PIN (Personal Identification Number) from the US Department of Education at www.pin.ed.gov
- The PIN allows you to sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically and access your Federal Student Aid records online.
- If you’re a dependent student, one of your parents should also apply for a PIN so that he/she can electronically sign your FAFSA.
- Keep your PIN private as it gives access to your personal information; avoid identity theft.
- If you opt to receive your PIN by e-mail, you should add FederalStudentAidPIN@cpsemail.ed.gov to your e-mail address book to help avoid delivery problems.

Step 2
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students are encouraged submit their FAFSA on the Internet at www.fafsa.gov. Students may view a detailed listing of the application procedure by visiting the SUNYIT web site at www.sunyit.edu (from the home page select “Offices,”“Financial Aid,” and “Undergraduate” or “Graduate”).
- Complete all required items on the FAFSA.
- Do not leave any field blank – if a dollar amount is zero, enter 0 on the form.
- SUNYIT’s Federal Title IV School Code is 011678.
- Once the FAFSA has been processed, you may be notified by the SUNYIT Financial Aid Office to provide additional documents.
- If you provide FAFSA your e-mail address, you will receive a copy of the results of your processed FAFSA called a SAR (Student Aid Report) by e-mail within 3-5 days; if you don’t provide an e-mail, you’ll receive a paper SAR by mail within 7-10 days; to ensure timely processing of your financial aid, review your SAR and make corrections if necessary.

Step 3
New York State residents must complete and submit the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) on the Web Application. Once you have submitted the FAFSA online, click on the highlighted link entitled “New York State Residents” on the FAFSA on the Web confirmation page. You may also access this application at www.tapweb.org/totw.
- Complete all required items on the TAP Application
- SUNYIT’s TAP Undergraduate School Code is 4975; Graduate School Code is 5695

Step 4
Students planning to enroll part-time who would otherwise be eligible for TAP, may request an Aid for Part Time Study (APTS) Application from the SUNYIT Financial Aid Office.
Please e-mail your name and current address to finaid@sunyit.edu.
- Complete all required items on the APTS Application
- Return completed form along with a signed copy of your most recent New York State Tax Return to:

Step 5
You will receive a financial aid award letter from the SUNYIT Financial Aid Office. The award letter will notify you of all financial aid for which you are eligible including student loans, grants, work study, and/or scholarships (a separate loan application is not needed).
- You must indicate which forms of financial aid you wish to accept or decline by putting “X’s” in the Accept or Decline columns on the letter, sign the bottom of the letter, and return the letter.
- You may also accept your financial aid online. Instructions will be included with your award letter.
Step 6
Before your federal student loans can be disbursed, students may be required to complete:
- Loan entrance counseling
- Master promissory note
The SUNYIT Financial Aid Office will mail you a notice if you are required to complete one or both of these items.
