Financial Aid
Financial Aid Eligibility
In order to be eligible for financial aid, an undergraduate student must be matriculated in a program leading to a bachelor's degree; a graduate student must be matriculated in a program leading to a master's degree. Further, the student must be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours each semester for the federal aid programs or 12 credit hours for the state aid programs, and meet the good academic standing requirements for financial aid eligibility (for additional information about the good academic standing requirements visit: Satisfactory Academic Progress under Frequently Asked Questions.
Application Process
The first step in the application process is to obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education. If you do not already have a PIN, you can obtain one by visiting: www.pin.ed.gov
If you are a dependent student, you should also have one of your
parents
register for a PIN as these numbers can be used as signatures when you
submit the FAFSA on the web. If you have misplaced your original PIN
you
can visit the same website for a replacement.
Next, you will need to complete a Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Students
are encouraged to submit their FAFSA over the Internet. You can
download
a copy of the worksheet by going to:
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws78c.pdf.
Complete the FAFSA and use it as a worksheet when you enter the
data on
the FAFSA on the website at: www.fafsa.ed.gov.
You can mail a paper FAFSA to our office if you do not want to
submit
it over the Internet and we will transmit it electronically to
the federal
processor for you. Contact us if you don't have access to the
Internet
and we will mail you a FAFSA. If you are a mid-year transfer and
SUNY
Institute of Technology was not listed on your original FAFSA,
you can
add our school code (011678) by accessing your record at
www.fafsa.ed.gov
and using your PIN as your signature. Do not file another FAFSA.
Please contact us at: finaid@sunyit.edu
if you would
prefer to use the traditional paper applications. We will
provide you
with the appropriate documents.
If you are a New York State resident planning to enroll
full-time and have submitted a FAFSA with at least one college
in New York listed in the college section, you must complete and
submit the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) on the web application.
Once you have submitted the FAFSA online, click on the highlighted link
"New York State Residents" on the FAFSA Web confirmation page. You may
also access this application at https://www.tapweb.org/totw/. Be
sure our school code (undergraduate – 4975, graduate - 5695)
is listed on the application. Later you will receive
a TAP award certificate, which you should keep for your records.
Once the above paperwork is on file with our office and you
have been admitted to SUNYIT, you will
receive an award letter from the Financial Aid Office notifying
you of
the aid (grants, work study, scholarships, and loans) for which
you are eligible.
