HOW TO START YOUR OWN FLL TEAM (pdf)

CNY FIRST consists of SUNYIT faculty/staff and area professionals who are committed to supporting robotics and other STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math] programs for area children.

CNY FIRST was established in Summer 2009 to oversee the FLL@SUNYIT program.

In 2007 and 2008, SUNYIT hosted practice FLL tournaments, with guidance from the FIRST Organization in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 2009, SUNYIT hosted its first official tournament, a Qualifier in the Mid-Hudson Valley program.

In 2010, we attained Partner Status with US FIRST, an affiliation that allows us to run a Championship Tournament for FIRST LEGO League. Our Championship events to date: BODY FORWARD, FOOD FACTOR, SENIOR SOLUTIONS, NATURE'S FURY and this year's WORLD CLASS.

We host Jr FLL Expos at our Championship FLL Tournaments. In 2014, SUNYIT also took on responsibility for promoting Jr FLL in our region by becoming the affiliate Jr FLL Partner for New York-Utica.

Since 2011, we have hosted the annual May Robot Riot, facilitated professional development for educators, and assisted at SummerITeens at SUNYIT. CNY FIRST volunteers participate in demonstrations at area venues such as the NYS Fair, MWPAI and MOST.

Robotics teams offer workshops to other teams and mentor children in settings such as UCP, 4-H, SUNYIT, and community libraries.

CNY FIRST facilitates New Coaches Training, conducts annual Season Kick Off and Follow up events, and supports the December championship tournament at SUNYIT. In 2013, three FIRST robotics programs were represented during Robotics Weekend at SUNYIT: Jr FLL Expo and FLL Regional Championship on Saturday, December 7 and FTC Qualifier in the Pace University program on Sunday, December 8. Both events took place in the Wildcat Field House.

In January 2014, SUNYIT became the major sponsor for a regional FRC team, known as Team 5030, the Second Mouse. The Second Mouse welcomes membership applications from regional high school students. The team is mentored by SUNYIT students, faculty, and staff, as well as parent volunteers and community engineers.

The committee welcomes interested and committed professionals who want to help establish and support robotics programs for kids.
