Counseling Center
Students in Distress
Faculty and staff, the information provided is a general guideline for you to help a student who may be in distress. If you have a specific concern please contact the SUNYIT Counseling Center at 792-7172 for further assistance. Our role is not only to serve the students, but also act as a consultant to the campus community. If you or your department are interested in learning more about how to respond to students in crisis contact the Counseling Center about scheduling a Campus Connect: A Suicide Prevention Training for Gatekeepers.
If you decide to make a referral, please call us at 792-7172 and provide as much information to the counselors about the student and the situation as possible. We typically see students by appointment. However, if the student appears really upset please feel free to call the Counseling Center and we will make every effort to see the student that day. When you call please let the administrative assistant know that this is urgent. Faculty and staff are always welcome to accompany the student to the Counseling Center if both parties are comfortable doing so. In a real emergency situation such as a student threatening to kill him or herself or having thoughts of suicide, call the Counseling Center or (after-hours) call University Police immediately.
