Electronic Waste Policy
Definition of Electronic Waste: Computers, Monitors & TV’s are considered hazardous waste material due to the content of lead, silver, cadmium and other heavy metals used in their manufacture. They cannot be disposed of in the regular trash and must be managed in accordance with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Regulations.
Other electronic equipment (e.g. printers) may need to be disposed of as hazardous material (recycled) if you know or suspect it contains heavy metal or other hazardous materials. If so, an evaluation should be done. If there is any question, the best way to evaluate the product is to call the manufacturer of the piece of equipment and ask if there are any concerns with hazardous materials such as heavy metals (ie. mercury, lead, silver).
Disposal of Electronic Waste: To dispose of electronic waste in the proper manner, you should forward a work order to Facilities to arrange for pick-up. It would greatly increase the efficiency in handling electronic waste if each department/school would temporarily store a number of electronic units prior to requesting a pick-up. A completed “Asset Disposal” form, with all of the signatures, must be sent to Mark Scheidelman at the Facilities Building.

There is no charge back for this service.
Usable Electronic Equipment: Usable electronic computer equipment that is in working order, with the processor working and/or monitor working can be handled as surplus equipment as described in the surplus equipment policy. If this option is chosen, care should be taken to assure that sensitive information is removed permanently from the computer and that copyrighted software agreements are not violated. A completed “Equipment Transfer” form must be sent to Mark Scheidelman at the facilities building.

Note of Concern: If electronic waste is found in the regular trash stream it will not be picked up. The EHS Office will be notified and the Dean/Department Head of that area will be notified.
