Presentation: An Introduction to Topological Data Analysis

The Faculties of: Engineering Science and Mathematics and Computer Information Science are pleased to present an invited lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Munch, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Duke University.  The presentation is open to all.

Title:                           An Introduction to Topological Data Analysis


Topological Data Analysis (TDA) has become an increasingly useful tool for finding structure in point clouds, with applications in subjects as diverse as sensor networks, image analysis, protein structure, neuroscience, gene expression, and orthodontia. However, much of the current work focuses on the analysis of static point clouds.  In this talk, we will look at applications of TDA to dynamic point clouds; in particular, using TDA to analyze and predict behavior of people and vehicles in aerial video of a city.  This talk will be very accessible to non-experts since we will also review the major tools and results from this relatively young and quickly growing field.

Speaker’s Biography:

 Elizabeth Munch is a mathematician who specializes in Computational Topology, Data Analysis, and Algorithms.  Currently, she is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Duke University in the Math Department, and will be a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota beginning in August, 2013.  Liz received her PhD from Duke University in May 2013, where she studied with John Harer.  She also holds a Master of Arts in Mathematics from Duke University, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Rochester, and a Bachelor of Music in Harp Performance from the Eastman School of Music.
