Safety and security conference is May 16-17

With terrorism and homeland security again taking center stage in the national conversation following the Boston Marathon bombing and the foiled Canada Amtrak plot, SUNYIT will present a conference May 16-17 for academics and professionals concerned with safety and security issues.

conference logo"Safety and Security in the Global Age" will explore a broad range of safety and security issues and topics, including Information Safety and Security, Infrastructure Safety and Security, and Health Care Safety and Security. The keynote speaker will be transportation safety expert John Goglia, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board from 1995 to 2003. A Boston native, Goglia has more than 30 years’ experience in the aviation industry and has distinguished himself in numerous areas of transportation safety.

"We’re pleased that someone of John Goglia’s stature will share expertise and perspective with us,"said Wolf Yeigh, president of SUNYIT. "No doubt his lifelong connection to the city of Boston will inform his insights into recent events and how they will change our view of urban safety and security issues."

SUNYIT is presenting the conference in partnership with the University of Security Management (VŠBM) in Košice, Slovakia, and Tomas Bata University (TBU) in Zlín, Czech Republic. For details and registration information, visit the conference website, sunyit.edu/sasconference, e-mail sas@sunyit.edu, or call 315-792-7197.

TBU emphasizes providing essential skills its graduates need to develop successful careers in an international environment. Established as a bilingual institution at which English and Czech are of equal importance, TBU offers its students opportunities to spend a part of their studies at partner universities all over the world. It has internationally recognized research outcomes particularly in polymer engineering, automation and control of technological processes, and chemistry. The university offers a variety of programs through each of its six faculties: Technology, Management and Economics, Multimedia Communications, Applied Informatics, Humanities, and Logistics and Crisis Management.

VŠBM has developed a “safety and security management” specialization unique among institutions of higher education in Slovakia and Europe, with a particular focus on transportation safety, and security education and research. In addition to its emphasis on civic, economic and information security, VŠBM offers programs in security management, protection of corporate economic interests, safety in transportation and logistical processes, information protection, crime prevention, and management of environmental risks.

SUNYIT, the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, is New York State’s public institute of technology, offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs in technology and professional studies. Its academic offerings in technology—civil and electrical engineering, cybersecurity, computer science, the engineering technologies, etc.—and its programs in professional studies -- business, communication, nursing, etc.—are complemented by athletics, recreational, cultural and campus life programs, events and activities.
