ATTITUDE

“Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is one factor
that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening
it. That factor is attitude.”

–William James (U.S. philosopher, psychologist, and pragmatist, 1842-1910)

Whoever thought that getting the last word is the winner in an argument was wrong in my opinion.  When I read this quote on the Ethics Newsline I could not agree more with it.  Being the bigger person in a dispute to me
is being the winner.  When in a conflict with someone, I often ask myself 'is this really worth getting all stressed out about?’.  While I in no means am saying to be a push over, I think that it is important to step back and think about the consequences of words that could be said if the tiff escalates.  I am the biggest offender of getting overwhelmed in the heat of the moment and saying something I regret in no more than five minutes later.  In fact if something you are that mad about is brought up, then talking about the situation civilly with the other person could actually make the relationship closer in the end (like the quote mentions).
