"Privacy & Text Messages"

A policeman in Rhode Island heard a cell phone beeping, so he decided to read the text which had strong evidence that the owner of the phone was involved in beating his girlfriend's son to death.  The question you have to ask yourself is it ethical to invade someone's privacy?  Even if it is to find evidence of a crime such as murder?  I think there would have to be a line drawn at a certain point in order to keep people's right to privacy in tact.
