Dear SUNYIT Community,

The weather and the calendar agree—fall is here! Hard to believe, but soon we'll be at the semester's half-way point.

The weeks ahead will be eventful in many ways, and I am looking forward to seeing the beginnings of construction activity on the site of our much-anticipated technology building. More on that later this month!

I want to congratulate our faculty, students and staff for SUNYIT’s improved ranking in the 2013 edition of "America's Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report, which was published last month. SUNYIT, according to U.S. News, is now one of the top 25 public schools in the "Regional Universities-North" category. And in the overall ranking of public and private institutions in the region, we moved up a dozen spots, from 98th to 86th. This recognition of SUNYIT’s growing reputation demonstrates our continuing commitment to quality and our ongoing evolution; not that many years ago, we weren’t even eligible to be ranked since we didn’t have four-year undergraduate programs. Now we’re compared favorably to many older, well-established institutions. Also last month, SUNYIT was named a "Military-friendly" college by G.I. Jobs magazine, thanks to the efforts of staff and faculty who have welcomed returning service men and women to campus.

Fall is a time of increasing activity on campus:

*Wildcat Weekend brought alumni and friends to campus, and "Peter A. Spina Field" was dedicated in honor of SUNYIT’s former interim president.

* The Center for Advanced Global Manufacturing (CGAM) was announced during a conference on advanced manufacturing.

* Congressman Richard Hanna met with students and faculty and toured labs in Donovan Hall as he unveiled legislation that would help parents and students interested in higher education STEM opportunities.

* Two distinguished physicists, Professor Pavel Winternitz and Professor Ludvik Martinu, are inaugurating the President’s Lecture Series; Prof. Winternitz was here last month, and Prof. Martinu will be here this week.

From the classroom to the playing fields, it's a busy time of year. Please join me in wishing our students luck with their studies and best wishes to our student-athletes as well!
