Late Free Throws Help Gallaudet Slip Past Lady Wildcats

UTICA, NY – The visiting Gallaudet University Bison rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit and hit key free throws down the stretch to slip past the SUNYIT women’s basketball team 66-59 in NEAC action at the Campus Center Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.  It was the first conference loss of the season for the Lady Wildcats, who are now 6-1 in the NEAC and 7-2 overall, while Gallaudet remained a perfect 7-0 in conference play and 10-0 overall.

After trailing by six early in the contest, the Lady Wildcats would lead for most of the first half and took a seven-point, 32-25 lead into halftime.  SUNYIT would build the lead to nine after six minutes of play in the second half, but Gallaudet rallied with an 18-9 run over the next seven minutes to tie the game at 52 all with 6:47 left to play.

The lead would change hands twice over the next four minutes before again being tied at 56 all with 2:50 left, but seven unanswered points on five free throws and a layup by Gallaudet gave them a seven-point lead left with a minute left.  Three more made free throws would clinch the victory for the Bison and help them pick up the huge conference victory.

Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) led SUNYIT with 19 points, including 15 in the second half that kept the Wildcats in the game until the very end.  Senior Tamara Williams (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) registered 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Kwanisha Jones (San Antonio, TX/Indian River) dished out a game-high nine assists to go along with eight points.

Nukeitra Hayes led Gallaudet with game highs of 22 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks, while Easter Faafiti finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Britny Latham added 15 points.

The Wildcats will look to rebound tomorrow when they host NEAC rival Penn State Harrisburg at noon.
