Alumni participation sought for Green Campus Initiative activities

SUNYIT’s Coordinator of Green Campus Initiative, Mark A. Bremer, is seeking alumni involvement and provided an update to the Alumni Office on September 9, 2011, regarding different activities for September, October, and November in which alumni can participate.

Brenner lists the following upcoming activities for which alumni participation is requested:

1. Alumni members for the Sustainability Task Force (first meeting 9/15)

2. Participation and publicity for Sustainability Open Forum events (9/21, 10/26, 11/16 - View SUNYIT announcement)

3. Participation in Pollution Prevention Week (9/19-25 – View SUNYIT announcement)

4. Participation in Moving Planet event Sustainable Tour D'Utica (9/24)

5. Participation in EcoChallenge Energy Efficiency & Alternative Transportation as well as Campus Sustainability Day tree planting event (10/26)

6. Development of a Sustainable Mini-grant Fund for student projects

Bremer, a new faculty member in SUNYIT’s biology department, wrote in his update: “I recently attended the University of Vermont Campus Sustainability Leadership Program as the result of a President's Opportunity Fund award. There I learned a lot of great techniques and resources for infusing sustainability into campus and partnerships with the community.” The President’s Opportunity Fund is managed by SUNYIT’s Foundation and provides student scholarships and faculty/staff grants.

Bremer wrote: “One of my immediate goals is to team up with students, alumni, faculty, and staff to raise awareness of our activities and goals, and push some actions forward on campus. I'm working closely with the Sustainability Task Force on these actions. One important goal is the creation of a Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon emissions from campus sources.”
