UPDATE 6-Toyota's $1.2 bln settlement may be model for U.S. probe into GM
This article written by Aruna Viswanatha and Ben Klayman discusses the recent recalls and fines associated with Toyota motor corperation as well as General Motors (GM). Apparently toyota is being forced to pay 1.2 BILLION dollars to the justice department for "misleading" american consumers about an extremely dangerous acceleration/deceleration problem in one or more of their models. GM is also undergoing investigations for a recall on an ignition system problem that ended up killing 12 people. This ignition issue resulted in the recall of over 1.6 million vehicles over the last 13 years. i believe that this will result in stricter standards and rules for auto manufacturers to abide by when it comes to acknowledging potentially hazerdous issues with their cars that would be cause for recall. If these manufacturers are aware that their cars are dangerous for whatever reason, there should be a recall immediatley so that people dont get hurt. GM knew about the ignition problem for 13 years and did nothing about it and 12 people ended up dying. That is unacceptable in my opinion.
