John Swann is associate vice president, responsible for public affairs and communications at the Utica campus. He oversees the web development and publications departments, is part of the enrollment management team, and works to support a wide range of campus activities and major events. He has served as:

Associate Vice President (May 2013-present)
Interim Vice President for Administration (February-April 2013)
Director of Public Affairs/Chief of Staff (2008-2013)
Director of Public Relations and Communications (2006-2008)
Director of Public Relations (2000-2006)

His prior career as a broadcast journalist spanned the greater part of two decades. He served as news director at WUTR-TV in Utica from 1996-2000, and from 1984-1996, he held a number of positions at WIBX radio in Utica: operations director, news director, talk-show host, anchor, and reporter. His career as a broadcast journalist began in Missouri, where he was news director of KGMO radio (1982-1984) after working as a reporter and anchor at KIRX radio.

He is the author of "From the Mills to Marcy," the first published history of SUNYIT, and a recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service (2009). His professional recognitions include two Hermes Creative Awards for writing (2009, 2013); awards from the Associated Press (1983, 1991) and the New York State Broadcasters Association (1991); and a number of community awards and honors. He was named to the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce's inaugural class of "40 Under 40" community leaders in 2000, received the American Heart Association's "Outstanding Involvement" award, and has served on the boards of the Mohawk Valley and Marcy Chambers of Commerce.

He holds a master's degree in information design and technology from SUNYIT and a bachelor's degree in mass communication from Truman State. He has taught and served as a guest lecturer at Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica College and SUNYIT.
