Mercurio handles all facets of sports information for SUNYIT's 14 intercollegiate sports, which compete as part of the NCAA Division III and the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). Born and raised in Utica, NY, Mercurio graduated from Utica College in 2006, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in public relations and journalism. While there, he also served as a sports information intern for two and a half years, which included a month-long stint as the interim sports information director while the position remained vacant in the Fall of 2005.

More recently, Mercurio was a public relations graduate assistant for the School of Extended Education at Ball State University in Muncie, IN, where he received his Master of Arts degree in public relations with an emphasis in sports communication in 2008. He also received multiple honors during his time as a graduate student, which included being inducted to the Kappa Tau Alpha National Honor Society in Journalism and Mass Communication, as well as winning first place in the Communications and Minorities Division at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) National Paper Conference last August. The aforementioned paper was also chosen to be published in the Howard Journal of Communication in January 2010.

Mercurio, who enjoys participating in multiple sports during his spare time, currently resides in Utica.
