Mr. Mallen earned his BA degree from Binghamton University and his MBA degree from Columbia University in the fields of both marketing and accounting. Since that time, he has been a manager for a major New York City retail chain. He has owned and operated his own yacht building and marine maintenance operation in Miami, Florida. He owned a wholesale distribution business for 14 years and a marketing consulting practice - also in Miami.
Mr. Mallen has been a member of the Small Business Development Center Network since 1983. In Miami, he held the positions of Director of Procurement, MIS Coordinator, and finally, Assistant Director.
Mr. Mallen came to the Mohawk Valley in November of 1995, taking the position of SBDC Director at SUNY Institute of Technology, Utica, NY. Here, he has overseen the expansion of the program in terms of new contracts, new facilities and new relationships with community organizations. SBDC outreach centers have expanded from one in Rome to three including Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties. In addition to its normal business assistance services, the SBDC now has outreach programs including:

Mr. Mallen resides with his wife, Claudia, and two children, Jesse and Lynnea, in New Hartford, NY.
