Merit Scholarships for Transfer Students
SUNYIT acknowledges exceptional academic performance through its Transfer Achievement Scholarship program. Approximately 20% of new transfer students at SUNYIT receive a scholarship in recognition of achievement at their previous institution.
Transfer Achievement Scholarship Process
- Transfer students are considered for a merit scholarship at the time that they are reviewed for admission to SUNYIT. A separate scholarship application is not required.
- Students are notified in writing if they are awarded a scholarship.
- Scholarships are awarded on a first come basis - early applicants have the best opportunity for scholarships.
- Transfer scholarships have been typically awarded for the fall semester, and are not always available for students entering in the spring.
- Award letters are usually mailed beginning in January for students entering in the fall.
- Students who are assigned scholarships funded by donors may be asked to fulfill additional obligations in order to acknowledge our donor contributions to SUNYIT; students will be notified of this once they enroll.
- Scholarships are renewable for a second year.
Transfer Achievement Scholarship Eligibility
- Students must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at their previous institution(s) at the time of acceptance.
- Students must have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 for consideration; awards are based on all courses taken, with GPAs recalculated for students who have attended multiple institutions.
- Students must be admitted for full-time study at SUNYIT.
- Students must meet all deadlines pertaining to admissions deposits, scholarship acceptance forms, course registration, and semester billing.
- Students must meet renewal requirements to receive full award amounts.
Transfer Achievement Scholarship Award Amounts
- $1,500 scholarship- Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above will be considered for $750 a year for two years of consecutive full-time study.
- $2,000 scholarship- Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above will be considered for $1,000 a year for two years of consecutive full-time study.
Five of each of the above scholarships are reserved for Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members. PTK must be noted on the student’s transcript, or additional proof of membership must be submitted.
SUNYIT may assign Transfer Achievement Scholarship recipients to a donor award. This serves to acknowledge and honor our donors who contribute to SUNYIT scholarship funds and have a vested interest in our students’ success. When a scholarship is assigned to a donor award, the student is notified in writing so that they and our donor may be recognized.
SUNYIT also awards the Empire State Diversity Honors Scholarship.
Transfer award amounts can range from $750 to $1,500 per semester and are awarded for a maximum of two years.
In addition to meeting the stated Transfer Achievement Scholarship Eligibility, students must meet the following criteria:
- Are New York State residents
- Are U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens
- Demonstrate contribution to the diversity of SUNYIT’s student body
- Demonstrate that they have overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education.
Students may be asked to present additional materials to establish that the above criteria have been met. Availability of the Empire State Diversity Honors Scholarship is dependent on funding from the State University of New York; funding is determined on an annual basis.
Transfer Achievement Scholarship Renewal Requirements
- Students must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA upon completion of their first year of study at SUNYIT
- Students must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours or more) throughout their entire period of enrollment at SUNYIT. Scholarship recipients who drop to part-time status (11 credit hours or less) or withdraw from classes completely during a semester in which they are receiving the scholarship will have their scholarship cancelled permanently. If the scholarship has already paid for that semester, the money must be returned.
- Students who do not achieve the minimum GPA requirement or who withdraw from classes for extraordinary circumstances will have the opportunity to appeal their loss of scholarship to the Scholarship Appeals Committee through the Financial Aid Office.
