Academics FAQ
How many full-time faculty are employed and how many hold a doctoral or terminal degree?
There are 82 full-time faculty members, 73% hold a doctoral or terminal degree.
What is the residency requirement?
SUNYIT requires students to complete at least 30 credit hours of work
at our institution in order to receive our bachelor's degree.
When must an academic major be declared?
Transfer students must
declare a major at the time of application to SUNYIT. Once a transfer
student is enrolled, requests for program changes can be filed with the
Registrar's Office.
What is the average class size?
Classes at SUNYIT average 20 to 30 students. Small classes and personal attention are the norm.
What are SUNYIT's graduation completion rates?
SUNYIT's completion rate for transfer students is 71% (1998-2002);
70.3% graduate on time (The number completed with 150% of time to
degree). The New York State average completion rate is 61.6%, as of
2003.
The first class of four-year undergraduate students was admitted to
SUNYIT in 2003 and will graduate in May 2007. Thus far, the retention
rate for the Class of 2007 is 54%. The current rate for the Class of
2008 is 64%; for the Class of 2009, 70%.
Are internships available?
Transfer students can work with Career Services and their academic
department to set up an internship. Although internships are not
required in all programs, they are strongly encouraged and allow our
students to gain valuable experience in their major. Internships may be
either paid or unpaid. Often students will receive credit for the
internship.
Does SUNYIT offer a tutorial service?
The Learning Center
offers tutorial services free of charge to students including
individualized tutoring sessions, one-on-one writing consultation
sessions, and small group instruction in a number of subject areas, as
well as some introductory PC skills. The Learning Center can also help
students improve study and test-taking skills.
Are academic scholarships available?
Over 100 academic
scholarships are awarded annually to entering transfer students. All
full-time transfer applicants are considered for merit scholarships at
the time of their acceptance to SUNYIT. A separate scholarship
application is not needed. Scholarship criteria is as follows:
- Completion of 30 credit hours at another institution
- Minimum of 3.25 transfer GPA
Is physical education required?
Coursework in physical
education is not required, although students may take up to four
credits toward open electives within their degree program if they have
not transferred in the maximum number of open electives. Most academic
programs at SUNYIT allow for the transfer of up to four credits of
physical education as open electives.
How do I register for classes?
All new transfer students are
invited to attend a brief orientation/registration program prior to the
start of their first semester at SUNYIT. New students will receive
notification of the orientation program with their acceptance letter.
The program includes course advisement and registration, as well as the
opportunity to obtain an ID card, parking sticker and other essentials
needed to become a student at SUNYIT. Students who are unable to attend
an orientation session must contact their academic department to make
alternative arrangements for course registration.
Can I take classes during the summer?
SUNYIT offers summer
coursework. Available courses are posted on our website each April.
There are three different sessions (two, four-week sessions and one,
eight-week session) accommodating both day and evening students.
Is an ROTC program available?
SUNYIT students can enroll in the ROTC program that is available at Utica College through Syracuse University.
